Health Consequences of Overweight & Obesity

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Overweight and obese individuals are at increased risk for many diseases and health conditions, including the following:

  • Hypertension
  • Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)*
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
[to which I add pulmonary hypertension ]
  • Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
* It is possible to have low cholesterol and triglycerides and still be obese. Believe me when I say that it doesn't make you healthy. Here is a quote from the NY Times: "Nothing fascinates the American public so much as the notion that what you eat rather than how much you eat affects your health."
